  1. I'm actually torn on how to feel about all of this. On one hand, I'm glad some of these assholes are being shown for the frauds that they are. On the other, I'm really worried that this will make people support this trend of putting someone's personal information, including where they live and such, out to anyone on the internet because you don't like something about them.

    1. The hacking itself is wrong. The idea that some person or persons can enforce their specific notion of morality on a company via blackmailing them is wrong. Doxxing people is wrong, especially ones that haven't committed a crime. All that being said, once these people dumped all this info, I will still laugh my ass off and root for the complete destruction and humiliation of assholes like Duggar. I also won't shed a single tear when the hackers inevitably get caught and sent to prison for this.

      1. I don't have any problem with the way you're taking it. I wouldn't mind if both faced their forms of destruction.

        1. the only real problem I have with that philosophy is whether or not my revelling in the schadenfreude over pricks like Josh serves as motivation for the next hacker. Let's face it, if we all had ignored this data dump, it takes away the leverage for next time someone tries to extort a company or individuals. For that I plead guilty to minutely contributing to the problem. But given human nature, I could pledge to put myself in a coma and scrupulously tune out the next big media shit show and it wouldn't change the outcome one iota, so I'm not going to lose too much sleep for having slowed down to gawk at this car wreck.

          1. I don't care if Larry Craig was cruising guys in a men's room. I do care that he was doing that and spouting anti-gay crap at the same time. Hypocrites deserve to be exposed.

  2. I never cheered when the newspapers (remember those?) used to print the names of Johns they arrested, either. I know that's public record, but the spirit in which it was done was mean, and not journalism.

  3. So after thinking about it, I want to add that I was in no way trying to attack sw19womble for linking this: It is news and I can totally understand why people are glad for someone like that going down. I just kind of had some thoughts of my own about it all and this gave a good place to say it. Wonkville has plenty of people that are capable of rational thought so discussing it in our comments is much better than almost anywhere else.

    1. FTR I didn't take any of the comments as attacking me for putting the linky up/

In fact I thought about the guidelines (and the fact that it was a Gawker linky) over what was said on Wonkette in recent news items. The salient fact was this fraud was grifting the wonderful Xtian philosophy and is therefore a hypocrite – and should be shown up as such.

Some random celeb who was cheating (or thinking about cheating) on their spouse is just gossip, IMHO and of no interest.

I do like Wonkville because – as has been said – we get to discuss and debate ideas and different points of view. It's about bringing interesting things and facts to the table, and not being an echo chamber.

QED the discussion over where the line is on this sort of doxxing. And FTR yes I agree that sometimes the means justify the ends… but for 99.9999% of the Ashley Madison dupes, it's pretty much I DNGAF.

Some holier-than-thou hypocrite making money off of other people's gullibility deserves everything they get.

      1. Okay, I really just wanted to make sure of that, mostly!

And I agree, it's the background of Duggar that makes it news. I'm personally really not of fan of doxxing myself, because I've seen it used mostly for very bad reasons (I saw someone get doxxed for getting a facial treatment once, ffs) so my views on it are clearly not going to be positive. That being said, Duggar deserves what he gets (and it probably would have come out anyway, considering how much he did; I'm not sure how he even hid it for that long) and for someone who uses his popularity to keep other people from getting equal rights, I don't really feel bad for him personally.

Basically, what I said in the past for other things fits here: Nobody in this story is the good guy. Seems to be a lot of those lately, doesn't it? Zippy put it way better than I could up there.

        1. I concur. Doxxing is a double-edged sword, I appreciate that… and as a fan of 'direct action' myself – although I'm mellowing in my middle-age…i.e. finding it hard to scale fences in the middle of the night ;p – there's always the danger of using the right methods on the right people… and of course always being mindful of 'collateral damage'.

I'm not sure whether these hackers were doing it for the right reasons… (did they not ask for a ransom, or was that public relations spin on their part?) However, I'm certainly against the Gamergate idiots doing it, just out of spite and, in effect, bullying and silencing critics.

          1. So this is what the hackers said about the issue (along with a bit of context, from CNN):

The hackers — or hacker, perhaps — appear to be upset over the company's "full delete" service, which promises to completely erase a user's profile, and all associated data, for a $19 fee.

"Full Delete netted [Avid Life Media] $1.7 million in revenue in 2014. It's also a complete lie," the hackers were quoted as saying in a manifesto published by Krebs. "Users almost always pay with credit card; their purchase details are not removed as promised, and include real names and address, which is of course the most important information the users want removed."

Apparently, their "solution" was to blackmail people and release information of a ton of customers if the entire site wasn't shut down. Seems like the people hurt most aren't the ones they're claiming to be going after here.

  4. oh, yeah- I never said the hackers in this case were the good guys. Also, forget vigilantes, I'm just happy when the criminal justice system here is fair. Set reasonable goals!
