  1. The neighborhood around San Diego State University, (neeSan Diego State Teachers College) contains a lot of single-family homes. As the university has expanded, the student population is being accommodated in "mini-dorms," which are these same houses converted into de facto apartment buildings, with one or two people in each room. Because public transportation is so crappy, every kid needs a car; therefore the front and back yards of these houses are converted to eyesore parking. Originally it was just local property owners doing these conversions; now it's a corporate business.

    And therefore the city's code enforcement response has evolved as well. Since the Filner debacle we've had a GOPer mayor (who's an SDSU grad, BTW).

  2. The sign above was once posted at the city limits of the Chicago suburb of Zion, IL, which still exists. My father remembered his father laughing as he pitched his cigar out the car window before entering the town.
