May 1st

It was a little over twelve years ago that I brought you home. You were just a tiny ball of fur, small enough to fit in one hand. I named you Akela, after the sage leader of the pack from the Rudyard Kipling story. We fast became friends, then family, and I was blessed to be able to watch you grow into becoming one hell of a dog and a wonderful friend. You really were one of a kind, Akela. The wolf in you shone through and made you truly special. I will always treasure our time together and the opportunity to be part of the pack with you.

But it is with a heavy heart that I must say that indeed, all good things must come to an end. In typical fashion, you let me know that the time had come. You were brave and tough as nails until the end and I am thankful that we were able to spend the last two weeks together saying our goodbyes. Today I had to help you move on to the next leg of your journey. I hope you’re now in a better place, free from suffering and able to meet up with the rest of the pack waiting for you in puppy heaven. I look forward to seeing you on the other side.

Farewell my faithful friend, and Godspeed.
