They're good animals, just not hunters. I raised black labs for years, great dogs. But you want a retriever to be very trainable and to not have that hunter instinct, or you'll end up with a half eaten duck. That's why they're bred to have 'soft mouths'. I remember training mine with special dummies designed to keep them from biting down too hard.
My second-favourite Just So story as a kid was "The cat who walked by himself". Subsequent experience with cats suggests this is something Kipling got right.
When I was doing a walk-through on the house I bought, a cat rubbed against my leg, as if to welcome me to the 'hood. Now the little shit comes in for meals, sometimes a nap on the sofa if he's had a hard night. Never gets in my lap, which is probably good due to cat hair. Never shows any real affection, and I am perpetually sad due to his lack of affection, or even respect. Fuck that guy.
