I remember the gender panic when G.I. Joe was introduced. Looking back, I wonder if it had anything to do with the fear that boys might think of the dolls as people. Unlike the little toy soldiers that you lined up in battalions to be mown down by … Waterloo era cannon? Come on, mum, I need some modern ordnance here.
Yeah, when I was a kid my two favorite toys were Barbie dolls (kill me, I loved the fashions) and Mattel cars. Fuck the wingnuts with a pink chainsaw of votes…
As a doll collector/photographer, I'm always interested in the responses I get from people – especially if I'm out "on location". I can forgive people not knowing the difference between a 'barbie' and a ball-jointed doll – not that it matters! – after all, a doll is a doll is a doll, to me… and the only really negative reaction I ever get is from some tweenage girls and the occasional man, who get really really upset and 'creeped out'.
Gender stereotypes and "peer pressure" are fascinating.

"But how will I find th – oh wait, there it is."
"But my little boy will be so gender confused!"
"Why? What is he looking for?"
"A G.I. Joe…doll…oh, wait…"
