They were really desperate to paint the natives in a negative light back then. When the explorers arrived on the islands, they found the natives cooking on top of raised logs over wooden pits that they called "barbacoa." Using that, the explorers went back to their homelands and had a propaganda campaign to compare the word barbacoa to barbarian to get the public to support the killing and enslavement of the native people.
