It's not so much they're clueless but that they despise what runs counter to theirs' and their base's beliefs. Having create doubt about science, disbelief about non-rightwing media, and ginning up fear of non-WASPs the GOP now has an ignorant angry mob who is in the process of destroying their party. They may damage the nation in the process and have already hindered global efforts to fight climate change, disease, and the other threats to civilization. But when your first concern is getting re-elected . . .
