As a materials scientist you'd have a special appreciation of Southern California Edison's (Callyson's electric company) and San Diego Gas & Electric's (mine) combined screwup at San Onofre. They installed a new, cheaper steam generator in an attempt to sneak under an NRC review requirement, and it failed on account of pipes wearing away as they heated and cooled. (Who knew a heat exchanger would heat up and cool down?) When they couldn't foist the replacement cost off on the ratepayers, they chose to shut the whole thing down and make the ratepayers eat the cleanup costs (estimated timeline: 300 years).
"Investor-owned" utilities: trust them, they know what they're doing!
When you're traveling on ratepayer and taxpayer $$$, it's all good!
Fun fact: when I paid my last PG&E bill, I made the check payable to "Pigs, Greed & Extortionists." Yes, they cashed it.
