Among Monsanto's other offenses, the wife of its former CEO Edgar Queeny donated the family mansion to St Louis County (where the company is headquartered) on the condition that it be converted into a museum for art about dogs. This [actually happened.]
And yes, the dogs-playing-poker pictures are—or were—in it. And yes, your [companion canine] can come with you into the museum.
I'm looking right at that book now (right on the shelf next to Brunner's | The Sheep Look Up. | Prepare yourself – Michael Gillick's story in the first chapter will make you weep tears of rage and frustration.
I grew up on the Jersey Shore, lived and did a whole lot of work in the coastal waters and marshes. The Toms River story was huge news at the time (Greenpeace attempted to plug the factories' discharge pipes with inflatable rafts, among other protest things) and is still notorious. The town's Burghers would really like all of us to forget about it and concentrate on their World Champion Little League Team, but cancer never forgets.
A serious Cautionary Tale for those who forget to pay attention to environmental issues and politics. Tell me again about all the governmental regulatory overreach strangling our economy and suppressing innovation.
I worked with a guy that grew up in Toms River, his house looked right over the river just past he harbor. One morning he got up to get ready for school, looked out the bathroom window and he saw the entire river covered in thick white foam. Striking, but it's the stuff you can't see, smell or taste that kills you.
Ortley got hit really hard by Sandy. They're rebuilding now, but a lot of those tiny cottages are long gone.
It's a tough place to leave when you're totally in love with the ocean and the beach/dune ecosystem. However, don't have anything that near the ocean you can't afford to lose and always be prepared to Flee, because, eventually the ocean will come to get you.
My grandpa was 99, sharp and happy andthe only thing that did him in is the broken pelvis he got when he fell. Solid Germanic stock and a good attitude, I guess.
Fun fact: IBSP was a US Army experimental rocketry range in WW II and was sold off to some jerkwater developer in the 50's. I saw a project map where that whole sand spit was gridded off with streets. Fortunately the guy went bankrupt, or else we could have had another Seaside Heights *shudder*

I'll leave the dandelion loving to the horses, thanks.
