This is terrible all the way around. So sad. Also too I so so so dislike zoos. I wish we didn't have them, except for animal conservation/protection reasons.
I think zoos can be a wonderful resource/implementer of conservation, protection and education, but, unfortunately, most rely on some combination of government funding and donations, which we know are both in short supply these days, which causes less than ideal housing and staffing.
Zoos can do great things in all those areas. My point is that it's just wrong to imprison the great apes this way. It's also wrong to destroy their habitat so they can't survive anywhere else. So it's not like there's an easy answer. But I think future generations will look at us the way we regard slave owners.
It's a tough one, because often the choice is Gitmo or War Zone. We definitely can and have to do better, but letting species get wiped out would be just as irresponsible.
Well the way I look at slave owners is (1) ew, and (2) wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. In other words, it's by no means all contempt, but with an effort to understand the culture of the time, blah blah…
