In the wonderful, imaginative novel A Soldier of the Great War, the protagonist tells a young man that veterans tell war stories not because they think anyone cares to hear them but because it's a way to keep the lost alive.
Every war is shockingly unlike the preceding one. The American Civil War was the first with instantaneous communication (the telegraph) and the ability to move men and materiél quickly over large distances without depleting the troops or the countryside (railroads). The geniuses in the Pentagon were arguing over tracked-vs-wheeled armored vehicles while their charges were getting blown up by IEDs in their Humvees.
Whoa, whoa, only meant that the video in the link was painful for me, an Old. I thought Callyson was referring to the picture below the hed, which is indeed touching. I whack my comment, and apologize to Callyson and others. Pure misunderstanding.

Sounds like I better.

Wow, that photo is heartbreaking. Happy Memorial Day, everyone.
She was saying it was moving. Really no need to be weirdly insulting.
It's OK–I didn't take Lot_49's comment as an insult. We're all good.
I am not sure what you mean by that, Lot, but I agree with Shel. C'mon. You're a better person that that.
As I told Shel, It's OK–I didn't take Lot_49's comment as an insult. We're all good.

Don't worry, honey, I took the comment in the spirit you intended it. No need to apologize.
That said, I got curious and watched the video. I'll be back when I finish crying my eyes out. Fuck…
Thanks, that's a relief. The vid makes any difficulties I might have seem trivial, anyway.
Well alrighty then.
