  1. In the wonderful, imaginative novel A Soldier of the Great War, the protagonist tells a young man that veterans tell war stories not because they think anyone cares to hear them but because it's a way to keep the lost alive.

    1. Every war is shockingly unlike the preceding one. The American Civil War was the first with instantaneous communication (the telegraph) and the ability to move men and materiél quickly over large distances without depleting the troops or the countryside (railroads). The geniuses in the Pentagon were arguing over tracked-vs-wheeled armored vehicles while their charges were getting blown up by IEDs in their Humvees.

    2. Whoa, whoa, only meant that the video in the link was painful for me, an Old. I thought Callyson was referring to the picture below the hed, which is indeed touching. I whack my comment, and apologize to Callyson and others. Pure misunderstanding.
