  1. Roberts added: “There is no doubt that this case is distasteful; it may be worse than that."

Roberts apparently thinks that if he holds his nose while issuing a decision, the decision doesn't stink. This removes the last remnant of opprobrium from official bribery. Pretty soon politicians will be sending out gift request lists, a la [Duke Cunningham.]

  2. Unanimous decision and it hinged on technicalities of what construes "official state actions." Still though, it's disappointing since it seems pretty clear that McDonnell is completely corrupt and belongs behind bars. And it does set a very disturbing president for future assholes to bend the rules.

And this bit is especially galling:

In a statement Monday afternoon, McDonnell expressed gratitude for the justices’ decision. “Today, a unanimous United States Supreme Court vacated my convictions, and it is a day in which my family and I rejoice and give thanks,” he said. “From the outset, I strongly asserted my innocence… I have not, and would not, betray the sacred trust the people of Virginia bestowed upon me during 22 years in elected office. It is my hope that this matter will soon be over and that my family and I can begin to rebuild our lives.”

  3. OK, can we stop calling them "contributions" and start calling them "bribes" now? Or do words even matter anymore?

    Fuck.
