  1. Meant to say "speaking," of course, and would appreciate it if my typo could be corrected.

Would also appreciate it if someone who can crack the WSJ paywall would tell us what awful things the Ancient War Dwarf had to say. There is no situation so bad that Kissinger can't make it worse. Kaus asks, "What are these mysterious vistas [that] cannot yet be discussed at a geopolitical level—only in discreet panels?" He probably means "visas," but who knows?

    1. Not sure I would go to WSJ to read that even if I could b.c. after reading this line ;…. the coin of the realm for statesmen is not anguish or recrimination; it should be to transform setback into opportunity. I started to grind my teeth and I'm sure reading any more would lead to throwing things etc………

      Got it………
Anybody wants to: goggle that ital. phrase, then open that WSJ google link in the private window thingy.
Imma have a beer before I decide whether to read it or not.

      1. "Brexit is a classic illustration of the law of unintended consequences." This is Nobel-Peace-Prize level cliche-spewing!

          1. Pet peeve: WTF is the law of unintended consequences? Is it, "Sometimes when you do a thing, some other thing happens that you didn't expect to happen."? Is this supposed to be a profound insight?

    2. Also too, you wanted to know WTF Kissinger had to say? This gives you the general idea:

The founders of European unity understood the ultimate scope of their project. It was, on one level, a rejection of the worst consequences of European divisions, especially the traumatic wars that had killed tens of millions of Europeans in the 20th century alone. But it was also an affirmation of the values by which Europe had become great.

The Europe of the founders’ youth had thrived by the elaboration of the nation-state, which on one hand competed for pre-eminence, but at the same time evolved a common culture. Its principles of democracy and constitutionalism were spread around the world, even while respect for the dignity of the individual had been violated under colonialism. The European vision sought to maintain the dynamism reflected in Europe’s historical achievements while tempering the competition which had, by 1945, nearly led to their destruction.

Too much of the Europe of today is absorbed in management of structural problems rather than the elaboration of its purposes. From globalization to migration, the willingness to sacrifice is weakening. But a better future cannot be reached without some sacrifice of the present. A society reluctant to accept this verity stagnates and, over the decades, consumes its substance.

tl;dr: Europe was once great, except for those pesky details involving wars and imperialism. It sucks now because people are trying to manage problems instead of pontificating platitudes!

  2. I usually have to fly into a rage when confronted by the latest shameless pronouncements of this inordinately long-lived evil-bloated tickbat, but I'm way too tired and the only thing that occurs to me is that "Spanking Assholes would be a great band name."

    1. Of all the times we say stuff like that, I really can't believe that that one isn't already a band name……….but am afraid to search……..
