I happen to know that Oakland cops are paid almost as much as SF cops (a lot), but we're not seeing the same results, and Oakland's budget isn't exactly as solvent as SF's. Not an easy job, to be sure, but this is sort of like inner city teaching- we need to do better.

I care too much about doing interesting things and not enough about retirement. Time will tell if it was a good strategy for me. A safe, cushy job would probably drive me more insane.
