1. Spring has now officially arrived. Not because of meteorology, or the ecological reckoning of flowering plants, or the position of the sun over the Equator. But because yesterday I heard the unmistakable sound of| these guys | calling for the first time this year.
Ah, Spring.

1. HOLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[perfect timing for Mick too ]

2. This |map says| the RWBB's year-round range includes all of California. But I've never seen one here. In southern Illinois you'd see them on roadside fence posts with clock-like regularity.

3. I have a very large and very dead maple tree in my front yard. I was going to take it down before spring but never got around to it and now it's full of bird's nest, goddammit.

1. Freeloaders!

Maybe take down all the branches that don't have nests in them (this will really upset the birds though). Or wait until next month just after everyone fledged and take it down (quick, before they lay a second clutch of eggs!). Or Rent-a-Raptor (jk)

Where are the people who steal stuff you leave in your front yard when you really need them?

2. We've got seagulls nesting in the chimney caps. Last year I thought they were just hanging around and turned the hose on them when they'd fly at me, then realized they were being aggressive to defend their nests. Our neighbors could see the young'uns and were complaining about the poop.

So this spring I'm doing a controlled burn of the fireplaces every month or so in hopes of creating an inhospitable nesting environment, and hoping to avoid a Seoul Olympics pigeon roast. <img src="https://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/storymaker-olympic-opening-ceremony-moments-1207096-515×388.jpg" />

4. I heard a Chuck Will's Widow in St Louis last spring. According to the books they are not supposed to venture this far north. Had nobody told the bird that climate change was fake?
