    1. That is truly awesome. It's a sponge-based dark reef, driven by chemosynthetic bacteria rather then photosynthetic zooxanthellae. This might be the only one out there, even if it's huge!

      Now, if we can avoid drilling and blowing the fuck out of it and burying it with a crude blowout, we may be able to learn something.

  1. They're looking for strains that do better in warmer water, didn't say about more acid tolerant. 'Course if the rest of the critters don't do well in warmer, acid water, won't matter much anyway. [ Restoration is tough on the mental well being of its' practitioners.]

    I just hope we're in time. 96% of the Great Barrier Reef experienced bleaching this Austral summer. Smashing the previous record. In fact, all the tropical reef systems we've been monitoring have bleached this year. We're about to lose a big part of the oceans if we can't figure out how to adapt and – eventually – turn down the thermostat.
