  1. George Wallace gave the Anniston Star that nickname because it was one of the only papers in the South to support school desegregation. When I had a project at Fort McClellan (in Anniston) various Army Guard colonels I met loved to tell stories about how the paper scourged the Army for its very slow, very expensive cleanup efforts at Anniston Army Depot, an erstwhile chemical weapons plant.

    They also told me how a public affairs officer who'd worked in the Pentagon came there and said, "Yeah, okay, you county boys just don't know how to handle an editor. I'll take care of this." So a meeting was arranged and the recent arrival went in, the doors closed, and when he came out he was shaking his fist and screaming, "You son of a bitch, I'll kill you for this!"
