California Highway Patrol and State Legi Say This is Safe

  1. I used to do that all the time. Especially handy for the short time I was a courier in Los Angeles40+ years ago. Now I wouldn't ride on those freeways on a bet.

  2. As long as the cyclists are careful, I don't have a problem with this. Anything that makes the traffic even a skosh better works for me FFS.

  3. It blew my mind that this was legal when I moved here. I'm OK with it as long as folks aren't jerks, and will move over a bit if I can to help bikes get by when stuck in traffic. Traffic around here sucks so bad I can't in good conscience stop folks who can get past it. Let's all get along!

BTW I heard the original reason for this was motorcycles were air cooled. LOL, not so much any more. guess I can also lane split with my old style air cooled Beetle, then.

    1. Even those old Beetles have a cooling fan. The only air-cooled bikes I know of with a cooling fan were the special Shriners Harley-Davidsons.

I actually had people open their door on me. I fucking hate people like that.

      1. yes, you are correct, the fan never stops on a Beetle or the Beetle soon stops.

Then again, the claim that a vehicle needs to keep going to stay cool strikes me more as a "fix the vehicle" rather than a "change the law" thing.

Also, since you're clearly in the know, I take it motorcycles don't have to pass emission standards? Sometimes when a line of them pass me jogging I almost get a buzz…

        1. Motorcycles are subject to emissions standards too, but once you pass, that's it until you sell it. Aftermarket exhaust is the single most common modification. Most owners do that for sound, but it also affects emissions. I don't like noisy bikes. I also don't like smelly bikes. Now that fuel injection is becoming the norm, that won't be as much a problem in the future.

          1. Well, you know my deal, I have the "pleasure" of listening to motorcycles joyriding on my street on a regular basis. Noise and disregard for traffic laws on this residential street are common with bikers here. Although, one night out with my telescope, a guy with a Zero pretty much snuck up on me. I was cool with that. Gave him a look and we had a nice chat.
