Maybe the solar collectors on your roof don’t HAVE to look like a bunch of cookie sheets

  1. As if tar paper with little bits of rock stuck on it is the pinnacle of of roofage. Give me just a small fucking break.

    1. Yeah, but owners of houses with cedar shingle or tile roofs aren't anxious to festoon them with big black slabs on sticks. The real promise of this, though, is that you'd design this into new construction and the panels would be the weather membrane as well, maybe.

It'd all work great until the first hail storm…

      1. In my fire-prone 'hood near the high mountains, wood shakes or shingles have been outlawed for decades. Most of the older houses don't have rafters designed for the weight of tiles, so most of us have those nasty composite shingles. I'd love to be able to replace mine with a solar roof, but I'm too old to ever pay it off.

          1. A good friend of mine–a neighbor of yours, actually–is a former roofing contractor. He was trying like hell to get solar roofing components off the ground, but couldn't sell it. I think Elon Musk will probably have a better shot at it.

        1. If you have some land around your compound, of course, ground-level solar has advantages, like non-life-threatening maintenance access. I have a friend who lives up near Pine Valley CA who's going to do that. Not so practical in suburban and urban areas, of course.

          1. Out here in the desert, I've got 1 1/4 acre. Plenty for such pursuits, and/or wind. Back in CA, I've only got a 1/3 acre lot, not enough free space for a ground array. Not enough Ameros anyway, so I'll just be a cheerleader for this revolution.

      2. I hear hailstorms are why aluminum siding never flew in the midwest? Hail at an angle is kind of a bummer for that.

Also- nobody's forcing anyone to go solar, are they?

There's a house near me that has scalloped solar tiles. Looks cook. Can send you a pic if you'd like.

          1. OK, feeling motivated and needing the distraction, I drove over there today- it turns out those tiles are not solar. Same damn color, though. The owners weren’t home, but I didn’t see any wiring or such, but damn, they were the exact same color as solar panels, that dark blue/black.>
