Patterson I believe is the author of "Along Came A Spider" and similar mysteries; this is the first I've learned of his philanthropy. Independent bookstores are much diminished in number but the ones who have survived are fighting hard to continue serving their communities~
Funny, and encouraging, how authors without big literary reputations are often the most encouraging of other writers. Michener did a lot of this, I believe. They won't find the Proust if you can't get them in the store first.
