        1. Becoming a career foreign service officer is very competitive, and a lot of people take the exam, so State has its choice of good folks. Under current civil service laws, they can't be asked to leave, although they could be assigned to other jobs. The career people working in desirable "postings" (as they like to call them) are probably used to having to deal with idiot ambassadors who have been rewarded for political contributions.

          But when they put an oil man in charge of the whole thing, that's pretty much an insult to the idea of diplomacy.

  1. Meanwhile, my Kiwi friend and her USAmerican husband are returning to USAmerica. Maybe they know something, but it's supposed to be for family reasons. They're both older, and NZ health services have saved both of their lives.
