I did my first star party for The Nature Company at their Philly store. Ah, those were the days…
Great place! Franklin Institute is pretty fun, too.
Yeah, but The Nature Company crashed and burned in the late ‘90s.:( I cannot confirm or deny it had to do with my departure from their employ
should have said Iggles fan, based upon the NFL jersey in the surveillance video. Can't say I'm surprised that the same people who booed and threw batteries at Santa would also curb stomp hitchBOT
Hmmm… sort of confirms the rambling point I was trying to make below!
Like trying to take credit for an awful thing. Then maybe realising they'd bitten off more than they could chew in their desire for celebrity.
I mean, ha ha! It was only a crummy-looking robot, right? Why would anyone…. oh, shit….
We love stories, and movies, we have favourite fictional characters – and 'the cult of the celebrity' forces so many different imaginary 'personal attachments' to film stars and musicians and people we've never even met. It's fascinating and weird, all at the same time. My motto is "never meet your heroes".
Anyway, for poor old Hitchbot, the cats and dogs thing is the most salient point. We anthropomorphise for sure!
And so, "killing" an inanimate object like Hitchbot – or taking out one's frustrations on it is the same as the kind of internet trolling and bad/rude behaviour on the internet. Apparently it's okay to be a complete asshole online, because the name or tag is a different 'person' than the one sat behind the keyboard right now, (me) typing away – or reading words appearing on the screen (you).
Yes, I'm fascinated by the ability of humans to demonise, or belittle, or bully, if they take a step away from reality. And obviously Hitchbot, as an experiment, was a step too far.
Regardless of who did it, yes, there was no need to destroy Hitchbot – but maybe it was simply a dumb fear "what is this weird thing? Fuck this!!!" smash crash bash!!!!!
I doubt whoever did it, realised that people had built a connection with it – or had known about its journey.
But even if they had, would it have changed the outcome?
Some strange-looking thing, sat by the side of the road, seemingly outside someone's self-imposed 'safe-zone'.
What's it tell us? Muricans are assholes and Eagles fans are even bigger assholes…
Forget in Jake, it's Philadelphia. Some of the things I've seen go on in that town… Let's just say that I'm surprised the robot made it that far.
aren't these the same nitwits who like to chuck rocks at speeding Amtrak trains?
Yeah that too. They used to throw cinderblocks off the overpasses at cars until all the fences went up. Such fun.

Harley Quinn cosplay? Really?
I need to go weep in a corner for a while.
All you need is a baseball game and aggressive vomiting and you've got the Trifecta.
could have had better surveillance, but I hear they beat up the bees and took their cameras.

Are hitchbots the new Travel Gnomes?

Gnome de Plume?
Just wait until the Redskins change their name to the Washington Robots™.
Don't they already regularly get the shit kicked out of them as it is?
Redbots™
I, for one, would like to point out to our new robot overlords that I never turned down a hitchbot
I would have been honored to take an information-seeker to the Grand Canyon.
