      1. The Chicago suburb where I spent part of my youth used to spray the trees with clouds of DDT every summer to suppress the mosquitoes. That stopped a year or two after Silent Spring was serialized in the New Yorker, and when it did, a neat thing happened: the fireflies came back.

          1. We just presumed that when the skeeters were killed, all the things that fed on them did too. There were very few birds when the poisoning was happening.

          2. I don't know if the birds died, or if they instinctively knew to stay away? Either way, that's why I don't use rodenticides on my gophers, the upstream predators. One of my favorite harbingers of spring is the return of the turkey vultures, and I would rightfully feel bad if I unintentionally killed one. Also, cats.

        1. I heard there was a fart chord
that David played, and it pleased the Lord
but you don't really care for farting, do you?

          1. Yeah, I heard of that. Sacred Fart singing I think it's called….
….shape notes and stuff like that.

  1. Hmm….probably about the same rainfall/soil environment as Chicago, with lots of lawns and elm street trees. Maybe our guys overdid it with the poison. They just pulled a little trailer behind a pickup truck and the cloud of whatever came out at whatever rate.
