In one regard, I survived 2008 kind of OK. I was debt-free with a decent 401(k) balance. My house was paid for, so I wasn't at risk of becoming homeless. I did lose 50% of my 401(k), with no possibility of replenishing it due to my having been put out to pasture mere months earlier. This time I have zero savings and more debt than I've ever carried in my life.
