  1. I remember how surprised the woman running the desk was to see someone under the age of 40 back in 2014. We really need to fix this low turnout problem.

  2. in 2016, for the first time ever, people of color, young Americans and unmarried women will likely cast over half of all the ballots in the presidential election

Can't wait until the GOP figures this out and enacts a fuckton of additional voter suppression fraud laws…

      1. I may get myself shitcanned here, but this has been bothering me for a while. As a furriner, I only heard of this 3/5 thing recently. From what I can tell, the slave states wanted a slave to count as a full person for one purpose only: to get them more members of Congress. Granting slaves a vote, or personal autonomy, or any other attributes of a real person were right out. The "free" states didn't want them to count as people at all, to reduce the power of the South, and they all compromised on 3/5. This is all shameful in the extreme, but the use of "Republicans think x is 3/5 of a person" strikes me as unwise, particularly in the presence of any conservatives who know some history.

        1. You're not going to get shitcanned from me, considering you have a good point. That being said, considering we're talking about the set of people that have those defending the confederacy today as a decently large portion of the base and they keep bringing up racist things, the 3/5ths of a person thing works enough for me considering it was that sort of person who wanted it in the first place. It sometimes feels like they want to go back in time pretty far anyway.

We basically ended up compromising on something really shameful using that, kicked the issue down the curb for 85 years, and made things worse for ourselves for the sake of being a country that never really was together in many ways for a long time. Sad time in history to be sure.

          1. I went on vacation back in May to Charleston, SC and things were pretty striking. Like the number of people literally defending slavery, not knowing they were talking to a liberal from the north.

          2. It's not just the south. This past year I've had a few people I've known around town for quite a while say to me, out of the blue, in a confiding tone as if they assume I'll agree with them, astonishingly casual racist and christianist comments. It wasn't defending slavery, but it was still very retrograde thinking based on minor incidents, was clearly right beneath the surface and that they felt comfortable conversing about. wtf?

          3. Yeah, there's that sort of thing all over. It just felt like it was more obvious down there where people would take it to another, really absurd level. How could anyone seriously try to claim that slavery was good for black people? In the open with lots of people able to hear it?

Also interesting that slave owners there apparently used the Don't Tread On Me flag to protest the north.

        2. ….any conservatives who know some history…..
          So, we're pretty safe then.
You're right about the history as far as I know, but to add on to Jedi Karen, my sense is that the 'tards don't really want to dig too deeply. Remember that one of their 'go to's ' is USian exceptionalism, while we're more likely to admit that the US is often absolutely horrible. So if they want to play, let 'em bring the truth.
