My take (not a very unexpected one, to be fair): the GOP fighting this war on science for forever and instead doing tax cuts and trying to send troops into everywhere ever is making us fall behind in funding this kind of thing. Just like with almost everything else.
Spot on. It started with Reagan's Government isn't the solution, Government is the problem rhetoric in the '80's and has ridden precipitously downhill from there to today's obviously extreme end.
It's a religion now, with its principles being:
*Government always spends too much
*Government is too involved in our lives
*Government cannot do anything right
*Regulations are bad and stifle the free market
*free markets regulate themselves
No amount of data will convince the GOP that Conservatism (whatever they say it is this week) and Free Marketeering as it has been implemented over the last quarter century has been a catastrophic failure. Even though it is unquestionably true.
Combine this secular religion with the GOP's normal anti intellectualism, root paranoia and embrace of Christian apocalyptic dominion-ism, and you begin to understand why American society has ground to a halt while our leaders argue with each other about hot air and fantasy.
I don't see any way out of this except for many of the people who keep electing these radicals to die. I hope that it's from natural causes, that they don't take the rest of us with them and that there's something left to build with after they've gone.

Go for even more radicals in center-left areas.
