  1. This, friends is a Big Fucking Deal, thanks to government fishery scientists, national regulations, international treaties and fisherman/ scientist co-operation.

Yeah, everything right-wingers don't understand, fear and despise.

    1. If you let them regulate themselves, they'll cause extinctions and destroy their own industry. Both sides lose in right-wing land, yay!

        1. or "…I'm a scientist, but not one in this field, but that isn't going to stop me from opining on shit I know nothing about"

      1. And none of them will ever admit it, as they waltz happily away from the devastation into their gated Happy Place where deregulation, privatization huge upper end tax cuts and the Laffer Curve rain prosperity and abundance upon the land and the invisible Hand of the Marketplace never flips you off.

Honestly, when that conservative economic theory hits the Dustbin of History alongside Communism it will not be a moment too soon.

  2. TBH I thought Newfoundland was truly fucked. When I visited Nova Scotia, I got to read a poster saying what you were and weren't allowed to catch. Basically it was "fuck all, ever"
This is indeed great news – if only slowly growing back…

    1. I know, right? The Canadians really clamped down on a lot of the fisheries there, with low catch limits, rotating catch zones and outright bans. The Canadian Coasties were almost in a running war for years with fish pirates from other countries (when I was up there last some years ago I watched them arrest a Portuguese trawler and crew who were caught illegally dragging miles inside the Canadian Line. Happened a lot). It kicked a lot of people in the Maritimes into poverty & unemployment and a lot of them left for jobs out west. Saved the stocks apparently, though, both ground- and shellfish.

Beautiful country, Nova Scotia. I'd move there in half a New York minute, if I could. The joke used to be "I'm just lookin' for a job that pays enough so I can stay here." Maybe still is.

      1. Got to say I loved Halifax and the surrounding area. I really want to go back and do a road trip to/round Cape Breton to see more of NS.
Had a quick trip to Charlottetown on PEI. – lovely architecture too, plus birthplace of the nation, so very interesting historically… and possibly the most fantastic bridge in the world that I've been on (Confederation Bridge) although the 7 Mile Bridge down through the Florida Keys probably ties it, come to think of it 😉
(Yes I have a bridge fetish!)
Still, I'm glad I chose Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest…
