Certain genres of games sadly seem to have much more hostility toward women than others from my experience, though the stats here are at least encouraging. A lot of fans of shooter games tend to edge toward the hostile side, with the notable exception of Metroid which is different in a big way.
Ehhhh… debatable on the Metroid thing. The game has a long tradition of treating the heroine as cheesecake with which to reward the player for beating the game.
Metroid Prime was clearly the best toward her, no question. The one you hit was Metroid Fusion which was one of the more questionable ones (also we do not talk about Other M. That was Team Ninja and was awful in every way from the game to how she got turned into some weak girl that cried a lot.)
Super Metroid and the Prime games is where I'm most familiar with and those are amazing, and luckily some of the most popular. It's mostly Other M and the newer Smash games where they screw up (though, to be totally fair, Zero Suit Samus manages to be stronger than Samus in every Smash game she's in… somehow…)
On the other hand, there have been some great female protagonists:
Lara Croft (esp the reboot)
Heavenly Sword
Lollipop Chainsaw
Mass Effect
Fallout
Borderlands
Bioshock
And of course all the Atelier series et al
I even took my old Buffy Chaos Bleeds game out for a quick spin earlier this year!
Hee hee! Of course, that's the conundrum with the FiM universe.. .I mean there are little foals around, so at least some of the characters must be shagging.
Unless the pony version of the stork drops them into town, I suppose: i.e. Bristol Palin sex-ed ….
Idk, after 12 years of Elder Scrolls, "Consider It Done", GTA, Good Croatian Shit, Fallout, Chocobos, Deus Ex, Max Payne, etc.. I learned a lot. (He began with Leisure Suit Larry). He was not really there.. #NeverMarryAGamer—
So glad I didn't..
(Although I always liked Chun Li and her manhands)

Ironically(?) it was probably the American-made Prime trilogy that probably gave her the best treatment.

Playing for hours as a speedy blue hedgehog while I was growing up never did me any harm.
Oh, wait….

Just so long as you stopped playing Sonic games before 1999 or so.
*quickly hides tablet behind back and whistles innocently*
No no, that's fine. It's just that, since Dreamcast and beyond…

Wake me up when Half Life Three comes out. Still waiting to see what happens.
SPOILER: Everyone gets hats.
Of course, women make the best villains (or non-villains, depending on how you look at it):

The only reason to actually try to play through Battletoads:

Well, if we're on the subject of female characters, I've been playing FF VI lately

Oh and I never quite got to grips with Beyond Two Souls, but that was down to me being thick about the controls. Good main character tho!

Breakout is the one true god. Thall shalt not have false gods before Breakout.
The bigger question is, how much is Kate Upton responsible for the downfall of Justin Verlander's career?
