At my school, those lounges were the only places in the building that were air-conditioned, which could be a real problem when school started in the middle of August.
When I was really young, I think it was like the very end of August. By the time I graduated high school it had somehow moved all the way up to the middle of the month. Apparently it started on the 10th or something dumb this year, I don't get it either.
When do they get let out? June first? SJSU starts tomorrow. I teach my first class Tues night.I remember the winter of 1977-1978, we had 9 snow days, usually only 4 are built into the schedule, we had to do another week of school at the end of June and got out on June 28. I love snow, so I’d gladly trade summer vacation for winter vacation 😉
Used to be somewhat early in June, I've seen it late May recently though.
Oh, we got 5 days built into the schedule, but we rarely actually went over it. The person who made the decisions was from Buffalo. I'd have gone with the winter > summer thing too if, you know, it wasn't nearly impossible to think when your classroom acted like an oven…
Ha ha! That’s great! When I got accepted at CWRU and got a tour around the chem dept by another grad student, I asked him what the winters were like in Cleveland“Oh, they’re no problem at all!”“Where are you from?”“Erie, PA”“Oh…”

August. Why do they start school in the middle of August in Ohio? In NJ, it was always the Wed after Labor Day.
