    1. It's true, living in what's basically a low-lying bowl is bad, especially in a state where policies seem to actively try to make it worse for the poor. New Orleans is a really cool city in a lot of ways, but the placement is so terrible.

      1. The culture is fabulous, but when they were interring the dead above ground because of the water table in 1800? The writing was on the wall…

  1. In each of the city's seven parishes, akin to state counties, evacuation plans were announced.

New Orleans is Orleans Parish. And it borders four other parishes at best, and that's only if you're generous and include St. Tammany across Lake Pontchartrain. I reeaaallly wouldn't include coastal parishes like Lafourche and Terrebonne in the "greater metropolitan area," so… did they toss in the suburb-ish parishes of St. Charles and St. John the Baptist?

And while the City of New Orleans is itself divided into wards, it's more than seven.

Tangent: I'm finding myself annoyed by news reports talking about the killed trooper in "St. Charles County." Journamalism!

  2. Distinctions without differences to most outsiders. I have a friend in Kenner, Jefferson Parish, and she just says she's from NOLA. She lost her house to Katrina, lived in a FEMA trailer while she rebuilt, and hates Obama. Because of course she does.
