Many, many years ago Bill Clinton was going to nominate Lani Guanier as Assistant Attorney-General for Civil Rights. The GOPers hated her because she's black, but seized upon a paper she wrote advocating for proportional representation as a way of ensuring that minority interests receive attention in legislatures. The GOPers called this "unamerican" and Clinton joined the witch hunt and heartlessly cut her loose.

Meanwhile here in Collyfornia we don't have proportional representation but do have what the party pols refer to with as horror as "jungle primaries," where the top two vote-getters in the primary face each other in the general, regardless of party affiliation. The result: functioning democracy again, after all the years of Prop 13 GOPer obstructionism.

So there's hope, I'm saying.

But not for Florida. They elected Rick Scott, fer chrissakes.
