Timing, so the prop/hooker will know the ball's about to come in. The hooker (front middle in the scrum) then will sweep their leg to knock the ball back into their side. The oppo will try to do the same.
The ball is supposed to go in straight, but it very rarely does in professional level.
This game the ref was quite good about a nice clean feed and no disruption and various naughty tactics… good to see. In the men's game -especially a few years ago, it could take two or three minutes to get a scrum to work!
"What goes on in the scrum, stays in the scrum"!
Thanks. Wasn't sure if it was just ritual or meant something.
No probs. Back in the 80's when I was watching and learning American Football (and baseball), it was always great to have someone explain (or try to!) all the little nuances and whys and hows.
The commentators didn't do too much of a good job on that score, but most stuff like that one learns from post-game analysis and highlights.
A bit like MLS do a better job than European analysts, who assume viewers know a whole lot more.
Woo! I was impressed by that. A lot of mistakes, but enjoyable and open… and no negative spoiling tactics. 😉
FYI The Rugby World Cup starts next week. The first round (round robin 'pool' games) will have some blowouts, but should be a good chance to see a few games in a short period and get a better feel for the rules and the various things like scrums, rucks, mauls and all that.
Also, too, Sevens games are a lot shorter time-wise and more open. If anyone's interested.
And finally, the Rugby League version might make more sense to NFL types (6 'tackles' to get forward, territorial kicking, more stop/start) than the 'open play' chaos of Union. Popular in Australia, NZ and the North of England.

Grandniece where I would be: on the bench where it's relatively safe.
If any one of those girls hit me I'd never get up again, and I'm pretty tough.
Ooh! Nice HD stream!
Also, good clean rucking… and no 'dark arts' in the scrum, either!
A bit like women's soccer, it's a lot more watchable that the men's version.
Could you tell us WTF is going on?
"Pummeling". And lots of it.
Think of it as an 80 minute version of the Music City Miracle and you're getting there!
"Ball Held Up".
HYDRATE!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOOOOOALTOUCHDOWNHOMERUN!!!!11!
FUCK!
Jeanna- THE BEAST!!!!!!!!!!
YEA BENCH !!! YOU GO!!
Raptors pulling away now. Both teams making some mistakes, but I think the Surfers will be getting tired now… especially if it's at altitude?
Shame about the kicking for conversions (PAT). Close but no cigar!
Yeah, those kicks might not matter today, but might in the future.
Just a little more strength in the leg needed. Nothing wrong with the technique, for either side.
Before scrum, Why the tap on the back with the ball ?

Did he say "Cuts through like a runny nose?"

HTH
Not absolutely sure my relative was at the game at all.
Oh no, looks like I missed something fun in all the craziness yesterday.
