I heard something on the radio the other day about the crazy high percentage of people in China expected to die of air pollution-related diseases, their air quality is so bad. I don't remember but I think it was like 50 percent, some insane figure. High time they took some measures.
Indeed. This breakneck industrialization at all costs has hit the entire environment hard, over there. Water quality and availability is critical in places (stories of 20 year olds with pollutant related stomach and lung cancers are coming out), desertification, wetland loss, land subsidence, illegal dumps, earthquakes due to poor hydro dam siting, you-name-it. It's like America's industrial age compressed into a 30 year span.
It's bad enough that there's' s burgeoning environmental protest movement among the regular Chinese. This worries the C.P. greatly, because they see widespread unrest just around the corner. They'll fix this, they have to.
Looking at these search results, it's occurred to me that there's an awful lot of people getting tentacly tattoos these days. Is this a sign of the Cephalopocalypse?

Yes, I think that all of the stories I saw were saying around 4000 deaths/day due to air quality alone in China.
The Chinese ruling-class knows what can happen when people become sufficiently disgruntled to rise up against an unpopular trend.
Good or bad, a top-down power structure is able to change course a lot more rapidly than one which is less centralized.
