  1. One local TV news channel runs a segment called “Pothole Patrol.”

Here in Phoenix, when it rains the local TV news go on what we call "Puddle Patrol."

"Look at this! It's standing water! In a parking lot! OMG!"

      1. Don't forget us Prius drivers, dutifully burbling along in front of you on the freeway at 50 mpg and filling up once every few months!

  2. On road trip out West last year, I screwed up West/Mountain time in Utah and ended up riding late at night through the Grand Staircase Escalante and part of Dixie National Forest. Even though I was running late to the nearest town/motel, I had to stop at one point and just stare up at the night sky for fifteen minutes or so.
It was even clearer than out in the Salish Sea/Georgia Strait… plus no pesky tall forests in the way, just loads of geology instead 😉
Then there was the year before, out near Mono Lake, CA: a short late night ride, lying on my back, finishing a cigar….Majestic. But the Mighty 5 in Utah knocked my socks off. Only the Interior BC comes close to lack of light pollution and clear skies.
And here I am, stuck in light-air-and-everything-in-between-is-polluted London for at least another few weeks…. :((((

  3. So move to Mauna Kea. The dorms there below the peak are very plush, just the place to live a nice celibate lifestyle.

  4. I went up there once when I was working at the Army's Pohakuloa Training Area, which lies in the saddle between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Weird, unearthly environment, a leveled-off mountaintop with all these observatory domes, no vegetation, the air so thin at 14,000 feet that you're gasping all the time.
