I know that we all shouldn't dwell on our past mistakes and look forward, but this whole Iraq thing still irks me a little.
I must be lacking in character.
Al Qaida attacked us because they wanted us out of Saudi. They got what they wanted, and don't bother us any more, if they exist at all.
ISIS attacks the west because they want to be left alone in their stupid, desperately poor theocracy. When they can't find any more petroleum engineers or HVAC repairmen or sewage treatment plant operators who want to live there, the caliphate will fall apart, and that will happen whether we keep bombing and droning them or not.
Either way, life will be miserable for the innocent people who have the misfortune to live there. We tried to build a nation in Iraq and failed, for a variety of good and bad reasons. There's no reason to think we'd do any better this time.
