  1. I don't even know what the fuck that thing is supposed to be.

My favorite 70s food was fondue. I loved stabbing the raw beef with the little skewers and the drop them in the boiling oil. I couldn't believe my parents let me so close to boiling oil. It was all very cave-man and very gratifying.

  2. Can't find a picture of it but once saw a recipe in Parade for something called "banana ham loaf," in which the ground-meat-and-bread aggregate was shaped around two whole bananas in such a way that when you sliced it longitudinally, it produced the effect of two yellow eyes staring out at you from a pool of red. Good eatin'!

    1. I was spared most of these creations. Though one could argue that kielbasa and cabbage rolls are as nauseating as these examples, at least they tasted good. By the mid70's I was in college and became aware of a buncha other foods, that were also often kinda iffy, but still tasted hella good.

      1. My mom once told me a story that the first "foreign" food she really saw wasn't until the mid 70's as well, after she moved out of New Jersey and into western Massachusetts. And that was some "Polynesian" place that wasn't really anything close to real at all. Sounds like that was normal.

          1. pert much- put you off your food for a good week at the least- the therapy for the nightmares OTOH…
