  1. When a boxer gets knocked down, he has 10 seconds to get up or the fight is over. In mixed martial arts, if a blow sends a fighter to the canvas and she is unable to defend herself, the fight is over instantly.

    Football? You’ve got 40 seconds.

Forty seconds to shake it off and bring the heart rate back down. Forty seconds to huddle up and await instructions through a speaker in the quarterback’s earhole. Forty seconds to stage a meticulously choreographed onslaught, practiced ad infinitum to the bark of coaches who have nothing physically invested in the violence they demand. Want to make the game safer? Give them less time to demand it. Cut the play clock to 25 seconds.

Doing so would remove the huddle from the game, turning it into a permanent “hurry up” offense. Plays would look similar: just looser, less linear, less rigid, more open to improvisation.

  2. This really seems like it would make things worse, not better.

PS: I know that the fantasy football season is over. but I hope we'll be posting during the playoff games…

      1. And get Seattle instead of Washington? Um…no, not really. Then again, I was sure my team was dead and yet they somehow stumbled into the playoffs, so anything is possible…

    1. Ah, the rugby approach. Only thing, in rugby you don't have a receiver in a crossing pattern get leveled by a safety 2 picoseconds after catching the ball.

      1. That's kinda the point–they wouldn't might not do such dangerous things if they felt the pain and damage immediately. The damn helmets might has well have a sticker near the face mask saying "Twist here to damage spine."

I've known a few rugby players and they were not what you'd call wimps.

        1. They definitely would still do them. You'd just see a whole lot more onscreen death. That's why they started wearing helmets in the first place. Death. Immediate death.
