Back in the day, high security background checks required a great deal of worn shoe leather. Today, with all the Sekret Service, Seal, and other spook upgafukts that make it to the general press I have to wonder if the USA, USA, USA gatekeepers have surrendered too much of this to on-line checking to save a few Ameros.
Some strange things happened when Rumsfeld (who else?) consolidated all the background checks under OPM rather than letting the military services do their own. Not the least of these was the hack of all the SF 85 info:
