The direction the pedestrian was facing while waiting suggests he was waiting for a "walk" signal to cross the street the impacting vehicles were driving on.
I'm thinking the white vehicle was making a "left on red" ("I was already in the intersection when it changed!") while the black one didn't or couldn't stop for his red.
