I cried in disbelief when Grissom, White, and Chaffee were killed and cried with happiness when we first landed on the moon. von Braun was planning a Mars mission but realpolitik ended such ambitions. I practically drooled over the articles in Popular Science and Popular Mechanics illustrating the cool space stations, moon bases, and rocket ships. Social change, Vietnam; so close and yet so far.
