I've been to the National Lava Beds area just south of Bend, which is probably part of the same area, more or less (just off Highway 97) Absolutely wonderful to explore, even for a short stop-off!
I also took an amazingly pretty late night ride across the 126/20 from Bend to Salem one night – north of that area – although I was aiming for the smaller road down through to Eugene (missed/didn't spot the turn off). That would have taken me through the McKenzie Pass I think… but the ride a little further north was truly magical, passing close to Three Fingered Jack, and the smell of camp fires from camp grounds in the forest and moonlit lakes way up in high altitude. Even if my motorbike was suffering badly and I had to nurse it all the way through the Cascades.
I love the Pacific Northwest. Can't wait to do some more exploring south of the border, once I get my bike back on the road. Anyway, highly recommend the area. Loads of exploring to do in the Cascades and the high desert.
Ya know what woulda been funny………..
