When I was a kid, I was not allowed to listen to my sister's cassette of Purple Rain because of | this song. | Obviously, I was also not allowed to see the movie until college, either.
An amazing performer, musician and altogether raunchy as all hell. Now let's all go skinny dipping in Lake Minnetonka!
Well, shit– I wanted to see the movie and my mom and I walked into the theatre maybe 5 minutes late.. (I guess I was 11 or possibly 12 when it was released..) Not kidding, I remember she saw what was on the screen and grabbed my head and had me do a 180 in the aisle and walk out.. (ouch! stop squeezing my head! owww! what?)
| The Current | is dedicating its playlist to Prince today, with songs and stories and more special programming tomorrow. (The Current is a commercial-free Minneapolis-based radio station attached to Minnesota Public Radio.)
Also too, MTV is doing a weird thing and showing music videos instead of reality shows. All Prince, except for when that intern cued up "Parents Just Don't Understand". (No, The Onion didn't make that up: http://screengrabber.deadspin.com/mtv-accidentall…
TOO SOON
Incredible guitar work there.
Brian Willams just referred to Prince as "this kid from the Twin Cities". Sardonically, but, dude, Prince was a year older than you.

LOL, it turns out "Darling Nikki" was the song that got Tipper Gore all upset.
Hey, everybody, Cmdr's mom is Tipper Gore!

One of those people who left a big < Before | After > mark on the musical timeline.
[We lost Lonnie Mack yesterday, too.]
Pretty sure it's Steve Winwood.
4 sure Stevie
I loved his guitar work in "Tassels on your Gland".
And who could forget the Prince classic, "Electric Paisley Park Ladyland"?
Foxy Nikki was one of my faves back then. The fact that it got him into so much trouble with the PETA Musical Resource Center was a bonus.
