You bet people who live in public housing should have to pay something: it's called "rent." Another myth that deserves to die is the one that says owning your own house is ideal for everybody and a can't-miss path to wealth or comfortable retirement. Home ownership (which is consumption not investment) is at about 60-65% all over the developed world, and subsidized everywhere.
