  1. Redlining and freeways and school desegregation turned the cities inside out. "Gentrification" is just reversion to the norm, and not a problem but a highly desirable phenomenon.

    1. I think the concern is what happens to the people that can't afford the rent in the improved neighborhood. Just tell them now it's your turn to find a suburb you can afford?

      1. Of course not. Public or subsidized private housing is a part of the program, or should be. Developers scream bloody murder about being required to build it and often just don't.

  2. You bet people who live in public housing should have to pay something: it's called "rent." Another myth that deserves to die is the one that says owning your own house is ideal for everybody and a can't-miss path to wealth or comfortable retirement. Home ownership (which is consumption not investment) is at about 60-65% all over the developed world, and subsidized everywhere.
