  1. When I woke up around 6:30 a.m. MST (which doesn't exist) it was about 79 degrees. The sun had been up for a little more than an hour at that point. In less than four hours the temperature climbed about 30 degrees. I expect things to start bursting into flames any minute now.

    How's by you?

    1. 83 here, though we are supposed to get close to 90 tomorrow. Guess that's why people "summer" here and not AZ.

  2. You have it worse than we do, but as of 12:09 it is 98 degrees. Took my dogs out earlier and the poor dears just looked at me as if to say "WTF?"

  3. OT: Trump just said he wants to win Connecticut. LOL

Edit: Oh, and Clarence Thomas is considering retiring after the election.

      1. Google shows the Clarence Thomas story only on RWNJ sites, so I didn't click those. As for TehRump and Connecticut, not finding a source for that ROTFLMAO story. Seriously, snow, I'd love to see a link for either if you've got one–thanks!

          1. Thanks honey. I needed the good laugh I got from this:

He also promised to win Connecticut, said he would do "unbelievably well with the Mexicans," and promised to solve "all of our problems" if elected president.

Although there is some truth to this. If The Donald gets even one Latinx person to vote for him, that will be unbelievable.

PS: [Link] for anyone wondering WTF "Latinx" means

          2. Refresh your page: I edited my comment to include a link to explain that. Long story short, it's a gender-inclusive term (as opposed to "Latino," which technically refers to men–"Latina" being the term for women.) It'll be interesting to see if it catches on.

          3. I am curious as well, since I've seen it before. I'm just confused with going x instead of dropping the last letter altogether. It's not like they use X as an ending very often in Spanish when they do with N occasionally.

Oh well, whatever they prefer they can go with, it just popped up on my radar recently so it's pretty new and I'm not sure how widespread it really is!

          1. Yeah, after more research I'm skeptical too. I saw it on Political Wire (gets linked on 270towin) and I didn't look into it enough. Sorry everyone!

At least the Connecticut thing is true, because LOL Trump

          2. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this is some Base-Frightening Operation by Roger Stone, to get all the slugs off the gun range and the Women's Clinic protest lines to vote for Trump, bygawd,

          3. I mentioned it last night It was a specific reporter who said he had a source that Trump said this, presumably backstage to his favorite sycophants, and said they thought they could take CA, NJ, PA, MD and CT. It was laughable, yet I've seen the AP (who is way farther to the right than most realize) pushing these out as factual, if slightly dubious, statements. Does make me think this is where they are going to do their ad buys, because they are very, very dumb.

          4. He's just a genius, planning to spend all his money on ad buys in CA and NYC. As we all know, ad time is cheap there and he will see so much return!

        1. I believe the Connecticut – Trump thing, because he's just that overconfident, nothing he says surprises me anymore and I've been expecting him to start ranting in public about "Annexing the Sudetenland" any day now.

          1. Maryland's newly elected and highly popular Governor just said "fuck no" when asked if he would vote for Trump. After literally running away from the question for a week.

Jut a guess, but I'm thinking Trump won't get a lot of help campaigning in this state.

  4. I'm out of the desert for a couple of weeks, but I do feel for you guys in AZ. I spent enough summers working on highways in and around Death Valley, thank you very much.

  5. We spiked 87°F here in the afternoon today, which felt awful because 77% RH. Down to a comfy 84°F now and the humidity has plummeted to 48%.

I couldn't find a proper Arizona ale, so I have to drink Anchor Steam in solidarity.

  6. 2:00 pm MST: Weather Underground says 116.8. Accuweather says 113 with a "RealFeel" of 116. Local news says 116. Outside, the streets are deserted, save for the occasional mourning dove with singed wings.

    1. Weather in Furnace Creek (Death Valley), California, USA
      Now
      [Sunny.]

      100 °F Feels Like: 94 °F
      Forecast: 76 / 115 °F
Wind: 12 mph ↑ from Southwest

It's cooler in Death Fucking Valley than at your place right now. Fuck!

  7. It's 101.7 here right now. I took my dog for a walk earlier after the farmer's market. It didn't go well. It was mostly a dog carry.

  8. 92 at the farm in Central Texas, heat index of 109. I had to change T-shirts about 10:30 this morning because the first one was soaked. Jesus, I'd love to live up in the northwest or in the mountains somewhere!

  9. So. Sick. Of. Air. Conditioner. Noise.

Yes, I KNOW I should STFU and be grateful I have AC and that the power is on, but fuck…

    1. It's not as hot here, but I rely on fans in my tiny apt, and I agree about the annoying white noise. I end up putting the Closed Captioning on all summer so I don't have to blast the tv, but CC is terrible for live events like news and sports. My new Roku Stick does have the cool feature where you can get the audio by plugging headphones into your phone/tablet, so I may end up utilizing that at some point.

  10. WV Poll: What is the best way to take a cooling shower:
    A. Start with warm/tepid water, gradually decrease water temperature until as cold as possible
    B. Jump in with water already at coldest and hope you don't put yourself into shock
    C. Other.

      1. One of our firetrucks was partially built in Finland, and our truck committee (which I, unfortunately, was not on) got to go there for a week to inspect it. All I got was a placemat from a McDonalds in Helsinki (and a glass bird with the Finnish flag on the bottom).

          1. My ex was kind of lame with presents. When he went to British Columbia, he brought me back a stuffed animal (Beaver with skis) instead of Tylenol with Codeine like I wanted :)

  11. D: Mix cool adult iced beverage, jump in pool (being careful not to get pool water in beverage). Float to shady part of the pool. consume beverage. Repeat.

    1. So, I can just do this with any random pool, right? Any tips for climbing fences without scraping one's knuckles?

  12. (checks LA Times)

    [ Holy fuck]!

Fire in Silver Lake closes 2 Freeway as monster heat wave brings misery

Hahaha…I called a friend in Santa Barbara and offered to let her stay with me if that fire gets worse. I may have to hit the road instead!

  13. Update on the Clarence Thomas thing via Wonkette: HuffyPo posted one of the RWNJ links to that story. Now I now why our Editrix loves to snark on HuffyPo FFS…

  14. About quarter to 5 pm MST: wunderground says it's 118.8 but feels like 114 (?!); other sites say 117. Just came in from outside. Official analysis: Fuck it's hot. Only suffered minor first degree burns. Luckily, the sweat put out most of the flames.

It looks like Omega Man outside.

  15. 78°F
    59% RH.
    Feels like…78°F
Winds calm, 1-3 kts S backing SSE (?)
One of those mid-June evenings you dream about in February – March whan you're pisses off at That Fucking Rodent.

Sorry. Would you kike me to send ice?

  16. 10 pm MST: It's somewhere around 108 or so. Overnight low to be 87. 100 degrees by 9 am tomorrow with a high around 116. Yay!

  17. Ohio weather update: Significant and widespread damaging winds are possible on Wednesday around here. There's already a significant severe area outlined from the SPC, which is pretty rare this far in advance. It could be particularly nasty that evening.

    1. Yikes, stay safe. Nothin' that fancy in our area Monday briefing is predicted for here – cold frontal passage on Tueaday with a slight to moderate chance of tstorms. Thursday's when your Wednesday system is projected to hit here, so let me know how it is!

      1144 Eastern

      84.1 °F
      Feels Like 85.7 °F
      Wind – 0.0 mph S
      Gusts 1.0 mph
      Dew Point: 61 °F
      Humidity: 52%

      1. I'll have to keep you all updated, it's possible that you'll be hearing the word derecho a lot on Wednesday if things set up like the forecast.

        1. Oh, great. The one that blew through the D.C. area three years ago was a rude awakening: trees down, lots of things blown off or over, widespread power outages. Fun. I think the straight line winds were 60+ mph.

It was a cool thing to watch, though.

          1. Yeah, I remember that one. First really big wind damage out of that line happened to be at the Air Force Base, think it was around 75 mph there.

          2. Yup. Andrews AFB, and that's outside the Beltway, east and south of the city center. The line damage extended at least from Baltimore through Richmond (a friend there lost power) and probably further.
Before it hit people here were all like "Dera-what?". After, everyone knew.

          3. Actually, I was talking about Wright-Patterson AFB east of Dayton. That's where the big DC Derecho got its start. That thing was pretty impressive to make its way from OH to the east coast!

Even more amusing, there was a minor tsunami on the Jersey Shore (like 1-2 feet) after the Derecho moved offshore, and the remnants of Derecho could be tracked almost to Bermuda!

          4. Oh, right. Andrews got some building roof damage here too, but at least AF #1 was OK.

I remember hearing something about that wave, now that you mention it. Wow.

          5. MPEG! WOOHOO!!! Yes, you did and We Are All Glad For That.

Just loitering in the 'Ville when not horrifically busy ,and pretty good. This is getting like Old Home Week, with X popping in and out, NTD texting me weird links and now you. Yay!

Don't fret, with continued exposure, the "Ville Verse will alter and adapt you to fit its own bizarre needs.

          6. Hoping to stay tuned in here best as possible. From work it's tricky doing, & at home my old Mac laptop c'est tres olde. I couldn't resist a thread about everyone's weather situation. I eat those stories up.
WEIRD being in an intensedebate mode, — you boast a palindromic p-ness! If I find a story to post does it have to be super-timely or just a blend of *hmm, interesting* and/or some novel development in the world? Glad everyone survived respective heat waves and wind-blasts~

          7. O, pleeze do stick around. W'Ville's practically a Weather Blog when the going gets rough. You'll see.

Yeah, Shy had to re-create The "Ville when the old server site went out of the biz and ,for Coding reasons, I.D. was the preferred comment format. I haven't thought about p-ness for a long time and got a chuckle, thanks! I generated several disqus avs a while ago, primarily to tag-team Troll SpeakerBlog with NTD, but never made it to the FP.

Post anything you want! We're easy and everything's comment-worthy.

Here's a few Wonkville Peculiarities you should know. There's more, but you'll find out:
            * As a security measure, Shy made the program only allow posts from an I.D. account that's commented on the page at least three times. After that, the post should go through fine (except when it doesn't)
            * Posts are accepted by machine IP number and cross-checked with ID account name. Usually if you post from the same machine and/or location and enter the same name it's fine.
*If you post something and nothing happens, it's probably hung up in "Pending". Just go th the last post and comment to the Admins, ask Please to Post my Entry. There's a few of us here that have Admin status, our avs and posts are blue. Ask for help and ye shall retrieve, always.
            * You can upload images to go with your posts. You have to do this, because the New Regime doesn't automatically harvest the header image from the article. I upload images from my machine – there may be a way to link to an online image, but I don't know how.
            * Article Associated Alliteration Always Acceptable As Hearty Headline Hysteria Happily Happens.
*There are a lot of tentacle, poop and vomit stories posted here. Just so you know.

Enjoy! Good to have you back!

          8. hmm.. So about how long does it take for a submitted post to reach the stream? I entered mine's info and saw a "Thank you for your submission!" alert, that was maybe 2 hours ago? Also, I keep forgetting my intensedebate password which is why I' haven't gotten more in here sooner~

          9. HI! The way it's *supposed* to work is that, if you submit three posts from the same I.P., same av that's spelled the same they should automatically go through. Before that, we usually sit down in the latest post and beg any Admins that happens to stroll by to Please Rescue My Post (I'm one of the Admins, so I Rescued Your Post). They stay around as Pending otherwise. Sometimes it happens to mine, too, if I put in a joke av name or post from a different machine.
Yours is up now, BTW. Love the header photo!

  18. Oh great: Forecast, Mon 06/20 high: 108; low: 68

    Current conditions: 97.5

Oh, and: Dew point: 55.2 °F, Humidity: 66%; Windspeed high: 0; Windspeed average: 0

I just came back from walking my dog before it gets too hot for her. 97.5 felt pretty nasty already.

  19. Here we go again some more. At 5 am MST (which, again, does not exist) it was already 95 degrees. Now, at 10 am, it's 104 with a 4 mph "breeze" and gusts of 7 mph. Sweater weather!

  20. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Danielle is going to bring several inches of rain to eastern Mexico. Danielle's the earliest 4th Atlantic tropical storm on record.

  21. It is apparently 104 here right now, but now the forecast thingy says that it is going to be 113 today. Before it said it was going to be 108. I am confused and I just want to go swimming.

  22. It's not nearly as bad here in Ohio as it is in the southwest but it's still pretty impressive for this far north!

    3:36PM
    94F
    Dew Point 69
    Heat Index 99

      1. It's hot enough that I wonder about the sanity of my neighbors, who have been outside working on cars all day. And not as part of work, either, just for fun.

          1. When picking between humid and 90s and not humid and 110s, the correct answer is neither.

Uncomfortable, but not lethal if you keep your wits about you.

FYI, Capital Weather Gang has a great synopsis (written a year later) of the Great and Terrible | June 29th, 2013 Derecho. |

It's even worse than I remembered. Can't wait for the next one!

      1. That synopsis was well worth my last WaPo article for the month! Those were some unbelievable numbers before the event started. 5000 CAPE? That's ridiculous.

I forgot how early that one started. That thing got together all the way back in Illinois! Must have been thinking of a different derecho with the Air Force Base, I guess.

Let's hope the conditions don't become as favorable for one as it looks like it might. It won't be as crazy (they're forecasting somewhere around 3000 CAPE this time around) but still more than enough.

        1. Yeah, the Capital Gang really cater to all the Weatherheads out there. And, that storm set-up was Seriously Scary. That vertical profile graph was pretty frightening too, and I forgot how many states were hit.

Now they're predicting the same kinds of popup storm cells in Illinois that kicked off the 2013 Derecho. I really can do without another one of those. I have to admit I will go out and watch. For a bit.

  23. 1:06 PM: 100 degrees, forecasted high of 106.

I'm glad I worked out before seeing that, because I give up on getting anything else accomplished today, and I am inside with AC FFS.

  24. THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A

    * SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF
    EASTERN ILLINOIS
    NORTHERN AND CENTRAL INDIANA
    WESTERN OHIO

    * EFFECTIVE THIS MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 400 PM UNTIL
    1100 PM EDT.

    * PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE…
SCATTERED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH POSSIBLE
ISOLATED VERY LARGE HAIL EVENTS TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER POSSIBLE

      1. Thanks everyone! It seems to be a pretty marginal watch situation so it shouldn't be too bad tonight. Still worth keeping an eye on the weather though!

  25. Crappity crap. Now it is 108.3. It now feels hot. I have all the windows open and the curtains closed and about five fans on in every room, plus the summer fan on in the attic. I think it is time to switch to Plan AC.

    1. I was at the grocery store just now, heard that on KNX and saw two fire trucks go by, I'm guessing headed down there.

Then I got home, checked the temp, it's 109.2

  26. OK, that's it. It's now 109.9. I am done. I am closing my pets in the room with the AC and heading to the water park. See all of you later, when, hopefully, hell freezes over.

  27. Good storm news: Looks like the lone severe thunderstorm will miss us by about 10 miles to the west. Here we'll probably get a bunch of rain and a bit of lightning but unless the cell north of it somehow survives with its outflow cut off by the severe one it shouldn't be damaging.

  28. * AT 447 PM MST…THE PUBLIC REPORTED A TORNADO 2 MILES SOUTHEAST OF
SNOWFLAKE…OR 18 MILES NORTH OF SHOW LOW. DOPPLER RADAR SHOWED
THIS TORNADO MOVING NORTHWEST AT 20 MPH.

Seems like the biggest storm today's in northeastern Arizona?

    1. I was about to chime in that there's clouds in the area, probably helped keep us down to 109. I figured there was a Snowflake/ Show Low in Kansas or something………..
One tiny cell up there. Probably start another fire.

eta: Nope, rain down here too. south in the Santa Rita's

Sunset was 8:33 PM EDT, Civil Twilight 9:05 PM EDT

It's still light out in the West now. Sunset was long and just spectacular, the darkening Robin's egg blue sky and the jumbled clouds in the East flaring bright orange. Fireflies out now, lots of them and , yes, I've seen The Bats. When I got out of work today the advancing cold front was pushing the high Cirrus up into big Mare's tails. A pretty good mid level Stratus deck developed later on, the shade was great news for my afternoon hike. Probably cooled everything off 10 degrees or so.

Red Sky At Night, but the forecast doesn't look like a Delight tomorrow with the front's passage and showers and thunderstorms. Thursday will be even more sporty, when we get whatever is going to roll over Ohio tomorrow.

I hope you're all safe and sound in The Hot Zone. That weather's just Not Right, no matter where you live.

  30. 6:18 PM:

    97 fucking degrees.

Hourly forecast doesn't have it going below 90 until 8 pm.

Hope the rest of you are well, and are not as OVER this fucking heat wave as I am FFS!

  31. The Strawberry Full Moon rose here about an hour ago. It's peeking out from behind a brightly lit cloud right now.

The | SLOOH People | are going to start live blooging with Moon pics and general Solstice festive making pretty soon, to now.

    1. Ooh, thanks for the reminder.

Also too, everyone: tonight is the night that the Senate votes on the gun bill. (who am I kidding?)

      1. I'm beginning to suspect that NWS doesn't really have good models for what can happen in Az. when a little wave passes by E. to W. Looks like it's Danielle pushing the moist up here.

  32. 95° in my home ZIP (92037) yesterday (Monday). This just won't do. Please have it fixed by Tuesday when I return.

Ah, [thanks.] And by the way, what is this "live blooging" thing in the hed? Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

  33. At 10 pm last night it was still over 100 degrees. To top it off, last night's Strawberry Moon wasn't visible here because it was one of the 4 nights a year that it was actually cloudy. Boo!

94 at 5am. The 10-day forecast has highs of 110-114 and lows of 84-87. The crazy thing is those highs are only about 5 degrees above normal. Time to invest in a kiddie pool.

  34. 1257 EDT

    We're in for it, later:

    .DAY ONE…TODAY AND TONIGHT

VIRGINIA…THE WASHINGTON DC METRO AREA…AND MARYLAND. THIS
INCLUDES THE TIDAL POTOMAC AND CENTRAL CHESAPEAKE BAY.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY

THERE WILL BE A CHANCE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THURSDAY.

    1. ….. meteorologist Miri Marshall said a cold front that moved south of the city was responsible for the rain and severe weather in the region.
      Yeah, shure.

  35. The ones coming south across Lake Erie are odd because it's both going over the lake AND in a different direction than most. Just as dangerous though, glad you took cover!
