    1. how I hate the diamond cartel. Diamond is an amazing, beautiful substance, but it doesn't have to be such a fucking rip off.

      1. Here's why it is:

The article used to be available for free on Epstein's Website but he's monetized it, and good for him. The short explanation is that the DeBeers family, which controls the South African diamond trade, has run a multi-decade campaign to (1) convince couples they need to buy diamonds in order to get married and (2) to suppress the seondary market.

        1. right- and it has to be a "natural" diamond, which is a semi-precious stone. About as common as amethyst. You can get synthetic ones that fluoresce, they used that as an early test to check for synthetics. Now, though it's pretty much impossible to tell them apart- the synthetics are better. Now they laser engrave a serial number into the gem. There's a lot of business that'd be disrupted if the natural diamond cartel was hosed. DeBeers also has a synthetic arm that tries to out-patent or buy any synthetic competitor.

          Fuck blood diamonds.

        2. A diamond is forever.
Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and a man’s worst enemy.
          Diamonds are forever.
          Fewer, better things.
Give her what she is waiting for… A symbol of forever.
          Heart stopping.
I never hated a man enough to give him his diamonds back.
Its hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world.
          My how you’ve changed.
          No pressure, no diamonds.
          Prophecy of happiness.
She already knows you love her, not everyone else will too.
          Shine bright like a diamond.
This diamond has so many carats it’s almost a turnip.
          Timeless. Distinctive. Beautiful.
          We speak your language.
You can find a diamond in the rough a lot of times.

  1. I read an article a few years back on synthetic diamond. There's a company called Apollo Diamond, founded by a guy who made his fortune in CVD (chemical vapor deposition) single crystal gallium arsenide. He had since learned how to make large (several cm across) single crystal diamond using CVD techniques. The story goes that he was at a trade show and someone came up behind him and said "That's some impressive stuff you're doing…it's a good way to get a bullet in your head"
