I did plenty of splodey stuff back in the day, albeit with plenty of primer cord. Worst things I ever had go off in my hand were firecrackers, 2 or 3 times. Stung a bit, but that was it.
Didn't the guys at Myth Busters get in trouble for a cannon accident a few years ago? And those guys are skilled at the pyrotechnics. If they can't create a cannon with predictable results, it doesn't bode well for the the amateurs.
