The Citadel is actually a part of the SC state university system, along with VMI the last of the state military academies. Graduates become commissioned officers in the military service of their choice, I guess. Pat Conroy wrote a pretty good novel based on his time there, called The Lords of Discipline.
And it's called "The Citadel" because the building was originally constructed as a redoubt for whites to hide in if there were ever a slave rebellion.
