  1. Several decades ago a friend of mine thought about attenting ITT Tech to study electronics. I suggested that Austin Community College would offer the same training at about one-fifth the cost but the name 'ITT' suggested some important tech behemoth. He didn't attend either one but stayed a tool-and-die maker and made shit loads of money. The electronics techs I've dealt with all bitched about their salaries.

      1. He actually got himself hired as an engineer for 3M (his degree was in Industrial Technology) and was one of two people to get a patent for their design of splicing fiber cables.

I recently saw a report on the great need for glass blowers in university and laboratory settings. There is a junior college up east that has a noted program. That's the bitch about turning 62. Now that I've passed the Back Nine of Life and am in sight of the clubhouse I've run out of time to even think of doing neat things. Also too: ROV operator, marine laboratory tech, etc. The absolute dream of many decades was to get a job blowing up snow drifts that pose avalanche dangers. I've read of people that used a tank, a howitzer, and dropping explosive charges from a helicopter!
Thank goodness for the internet and pot, at any rate.

        1. glass blowing, very cool. My parents met while working at a large pharmaceutical company, and the glass blower on site had a glass window to his shop that was eventually painted over because too many people would stop and watch him at his craft.

It's never to late to learn something new if you have the right attitude.
