    1. You live on Mauna Kea?

But seriously: check out the vid on that link, and watch them swing the blades while the trucks are in motion to avoid power lines, trees, street signs, etc.

      1. That's [Westgard Pass,] just east of Big Pine CA. I wanted to find a shot of them hauling the telescopes back down the mountain when the funding dried up, because they were fully assembled and massive. As a former heavy haul trucker guy, I was impressed. As I am with the turbine blade guys.

          1. Fascinating. I've never been to Palomar, don't know much about it, and I certainly didn't know it was built that long ago. Our local "ears" are also operated by CalTech. CARMA didn't last long, but [OVRO] carries on.

          2. I've heard that Palomar's utility has been pretty much wiped out by light pollution from San Diego's northward sprawl, although its Wikipedia |entry| says they're working on that.

When I was a science/space-obesssed lad, the 200" reflector on Mt Palomar was spoken of in awe as it was the largest reflector telescope in the world! U-S-A! U-S-A!

          3. Glass would know more, but I've read that there's a lot that they can do with upgraded sensors and adaptive optics retrofits also. It's still one big-assed eye, though.

        1. Of course they were taking them down! Their mind control mission was complete! I doubt you were wearing your tinfoil hat! You're one of them now!

          1. They're obsolete, because all the Mind Control is now done through modulated microwave emissions from all those cell towers that we suddenly see everywhere. You didn't think they were all for phone calls , did you? Ha!

          2. The ones I've seen in Vegas are phony palm trees. It doesn't matter, nobody lifts their eyes far from their smart phones anymore anyway.

          3. Shame though, really. The array was way the hell away from civilization and artificial light, about as dark a sky as you'll find in USAmerica. I can think of a lot of other programs I'd rather see shut down.

          4. the pic you posted above was not for an optical telescope. Still, radio free zones are good. That might have been for a submillimeter array?
